South Delhi is the third largest district of
Delhi. It covers an area of 250 sq km and has a population of over 2.5 million. South Delhi has great historical, social, economical and cultural importance. It is surrounded by the states of
Uttar Pradesh and
Haryana. The world famous
Qutab Minar, Balban's tomb,
Humayun's tomb are the major places of tourist attraction. The places of religious importance are the Kalkaji Temple, Lotus Temple,
Chattarpur Mandir and Sai Baba Temple. An annual cultural event
Phoolwalon ki Sair, celebrated as a symbol of communal harmony, is organized every October in
Mehrauli. South Delhi is also the headquarters of the Indira Gandhi Open University,
Jamia Milia Islamia,
Jamia Hamdard University and
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
