Phoolwalon Ki Sair is a three-day festival, commemorating communal harmony, celebrated at
Mehrauli in
Delhi. This festival, held every October, is said to have originated during the rule of Mughal Emperor Akbar II, in the 19th century. The festival is celebrated simultaneously at the Muslim shrine of Khwaja Bakhtiyar Kaki Dargah and the ancient
Yogmaya Temple. Floral tributes are offered at both places. A colorful procession begins at the Hindu temple and ends at the Muslim shrine, where people place curtains made of flowers on the tomb of Saint Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki. Floral sheets are offered at the temple. Both Hindus and Muslims participate with equal enthusiasm. The highlight of the annual festival is night-long session of Qawwali performances.
