Jamia Millia Islamia, 'one of the most progressive educational institutions of India', termed by none other Rabindranath Tagore was established at Aligarh in the erstwhile United Province in 1920. Born out of the heat of India's independence movement, with blessings of Mahatma Gandhi, Jamia was moved to New Delhi in 1925. The growth of it from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a Central University it is today is a tale which might inspire many.

Jamia Millia Islamia functions as a multidisciplinary university, offering varied courses in the fields of humanities, arts, sciences, social sciences, law, engineering, technology, commerce, business management, information technology and oriental languages.

Jamia Millia Islamia follows two examination systems – Annual and the semester system. The university houses a well-equipped library, which has a collection of more than three lakhs books and bound volumes of periodicals. A number of learning and research centers, including Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) and Academy of Third World Studies, functions under Jamia Millia Islamia.
