Khangchendzonga National Park, now named as Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve, is located in
North Sikkim District. It is about 103 km from
Gangtok and 20 km from
Chungthang.
The sanctuary is 8550 m above mean sea level and covers the Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain peak in the world. It spreads over 850 sq km of mixed coniferous forest and is home to musk deer, snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, clouded leopard,
Himalayan black bear,
red panda, blue sheep, lesser cats, Tibetan wolf, serow and Great Tibetan sheep. Avifaunal species include blood pheasants, satyr tragopan, osprey, Himalayan griffon, lammergeyer, snow pigeon, Impeyan pheasants, sunbirds and eagles.
The best seasons to visit are March - May and September - November.
