Colonelganj is a historic place in
Gonda District of
Uttar Pradesh.
Gonda is around 40 km east of Colonelganj.
Its old name is Sakraura and was an unknown village until AD 1780 when a force was send by Nawab Vazir to bring into terms the refractory chieftains of the Trans Ghaghra. Subsequently a cantonment was set up and the place was made the military headquarters. The British officers stationed here suffered the wrath of the Indian soldiers in the mutiny of 1857; the ruins of those Victorian buildings, left by them while fleeing are the major attraction here.
Nearest international airport is at Delhi. Colonelganj Railway Station is on the Gonda-
Barabanki line.
