Gonda District




Gonda District forms a part of Devi Patan division in Uttar Pradesh. It is bounded by Balrampur District in the north, Bahraich District and some part of Shravasti District in the west, Basti District in the east, and the river Ghaghra in the south separating Bara-Banki District and Faizabad District. The population is 2.7 million, distributed over an area of 7,352 sq km. The Kuon and Ghaghra are the major rivers and other rivers and streams include the Bisuhi, Manwar, Chandai, and Terhi. In ancient times, area of Gonda District was part of Kosala kingdom and it also formed part of Awadh province during the reign of Mughals.

Gonda generally has a tropical climate. Summer lasts from March to June, with an average temperature of nearly 30°C and it is followed by the rainy season which lasts from July to October. The maximum cold is experienced from mid-December to mid-January.

There are many important tourist and religious destinations including Swami Narain Chhapia, Paska, Varahi Dev temple, Prash, Tirrey Manorama, Wazirganj, and Jhali Dham.
