Ashtanga Yoga, meaning the eight-limbed yoga (the eight steps in
yoga), was propounded by
Sage Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras.
The eight limbs of Yoga are, Yama (self-restraint), Niyama (religious observances), Asana (posture), Pranayama (regulation of breath), Pratyahara (abstraction of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (super conscious state).
