Barbil is an industrial town in the Keonjhar District of
Orissa. The place is rich in Iron and Manganese ores and hence the majority of its population are migrant labourers from the nearby states, especially from
Bihar and
Jharkhand. Kalinga Iron Works, one of the major players in the mineral based industries of the district, is based at Barbil. Barbil is 135 km south-east of Rourkela.
Nearest airport is at
Bhubaneswar. Barbil Railway Station is situated on the
Jamshedpur-
Howrah line of the South Eastern Railways. Tata-Barbil passenger and the
Barbil-Howrah Jan Shatabdi Express serve the town. National Highway No.232 ends at Guali near Barbil.
