Located on the south-eastern corner of
Rajasthan, Baran District covers an area of 6,955 sq km with a population of over 1 million. It is bounded in the north and north-west by
Kota,
Jhalawar and
Bundi districts and in the west by
Chittorgarh. The forest area occupies 2,150 sq km. The Sagavan, Kher, Salan, Gargsari are the main forests.
The important rivers are
Parvati,
Kalisindh, and Parwan. Agricultural based units, textiles, embroidery, jute based units, leather units, metal based units, petroleum based mineral units, rubber and plastic units, silk and artificial yarn clothes, machine and machinery units, paper and products, and wool are the main industries. Major crops are wheat, maize, grams, coriander, mustard, and soyabeans. Livestock population consists of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, horses, ponies, mule donkeys, camels, pigs, dogs, rabbits, and elephants.
Dolmela,
Sitabari fair, Brahamani Mataji Mela, Piplod Christmas Fair, Phuldol folk festival, and Urs are celebrated. The important tourist destinations are Sitabari, Kakuni, Bhanddeora Temple, Bilasgarh, Kapildhara, Brahmani Mataji Temple,
Shahabad Fort, Shahi Jama Masjid, and
Tapasviyo ki Bagechi.
