Purakkad

Purakkad is a coastal village included in Ambalapuzha taluk, about 17 km south of Alappuzha. This is the place where the historical battle between Travancore and Kochi took place in 1754. Purakkad also met another battle in 1756 between Travancore and the forces of the Zamorins.

During ancient times, this coastal area was a port and the Dutch East India Company had constructed a factory here. Believed to have been visited by St Francis Xavier, Purakkad is one of the major fishing centers in Alappuzha. Purakkad Sree Venu Gopala Temple is the major place of worship, which attracts a large number of devotees.

Ambalappuzha Railway Station is the nearest railhead and the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport.
