The Zamorin, Samoothiri, was the ruler of
Kozhikode. They were the central figures in the medieval history of
Kerala. Zamorins were highly skilled and cultured rulers. The beginning and end of the middle ages, viewed the rise and fall of the zamorin era respectively. Their original seat was at
Nediyirippu. Easy access to sea motivated them to conquer Polanad which was a remote and undeveloped area around Kozhikode. There the Zamorin founded the Kolikottu town, which later came to be known as Kozhikode. After several invasions, their kingdom extended from the coast of Puthuppatanam in the north to
Kayamkulam in the south.
