Hemis High Altitude National Park, the largest high-altitude reserve of India, is located in the
Ladakh division of
Leh District,
Jammu and Kashmir. This park is around 40 km south-east of
Leh and derives its name from the
Hemis Gompa.
It is situated on the bank of Indus River and comprises the catchments areas of Markha, Sumdah and Rumbak streams. Spread over 600 sq km, this sanctuary is inhabited by wolf, Pallas’ cat, snow leopard, ibex, bharal, Tibetan argali, Ladakh urial and snow leopards. Various species of avifauna including
Himalayan snowcock and chukar partridge are spotted.
Camping is allowed in the park. The best time to visit is May to October.
The nearest airport is Leh Airport and the nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, situated around 690 km away.
