Anantnag District in
Jammu and Kashmir spreads over an area of 3,984 sq km, and has a population approximately of 1.17 million. The district takes its name from the great spring Ananta Naga situated at the southern end of the Anantnag town. Anantnag District shares its boundary with the districts of
Srinagar in the north,
Pulwama in north-west and
Kargil in north-east. The people speak
Kashmiri and
Urdu, and their staple food is
rice.
The famous cave of Amar Nath is situated 48 km from
Pahalgam. Religious and historical places include Kheer Bhawani Asthapan, Martand, Masjid Baba Dawood Khaki, Masjid Syed Sahib, and Shrine of Aishmuqam. There are many beautiful gardens, hill stations, and rivers. Pahalgam,
Acchabal, Kokernag, Verinag, and Daksum are some of the major attrations.
Anantnag has the largest number of health resorts in the state. It has a pleasant climate, ideal for the production of almond, apricot, walnut, peaches, and more. The district is famous for its handicrafts such as gabba making, carpet weaving, wood carving, chain stitching, and
crewel embroidery.
