Medak District




Medak District in Andhra Pradesh was originally called Siddapur and it has been a strategically important region. It is situated 100 km north of Hyderabad. Medak District has typical Telangana culture.

Medak, formerly known as ‘Metuku Durgam’, was the headquarters. Sangareddy later became the headquarters but the district name continued. The Kakatiya rulers reigned in this place in the earlier centuries. Before the Kakatiyas, Medak was ruled over by Devagiri yadavas, and Hoysalas of Dwara Samudram.

Medak is endowed with archaeological treasures. Archaeological excavations reveal the prevalence of Buddhist culture in ancient times. Today, it is known for the Medak Church. This church is the single largest diocese in Asia and the second largest in the world after the Vatican.

Medak District covers an area of 9,700 sq km of land. The population is two and a half million approximately. Agriculture and its allied activities form the major occupation of the people.

Medak has tropical climate and the summer is very hot and dry. The summer season extends from March to May. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rains. The rainy season extends from June to September. Rains recede during October and November. From December to February it is winter.

One-tenth of the district is forest, which extends to 97,093 hectares. High quality teak is available here.

The tourist attractions and the pilgrimage centers include Medak Fort, Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary, Manjeera Forest, Ramalingeshwara Temple, Sri Kasi Vishweshwara Temple, Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Nandi Kandi and Kondapur.
