Medak Fort is situated in
Medak town and is 96 km from
Hyderabad. This 12th century fort, lies on a hillock, and was initially called as Methuku durgam.
Medak Fort is an architectural wonder and assumes historic importance because it had witnessed some battles of Deccan for over five centuries. The fort was originally built in typical Hindu style during the period of
Kakatiyas and later modified by the
Qutb Shahis, displaying Muslim architecture. It has three main entrances, the ‘Prathama Dwaram’, the ‘Simha Dwaram’ or Lions Entrance and the ‘Gaja Dwaram’, or Elephant's Entrance. The wide walls with some natural bastions that are carved out of boulders and rocks on the hillock enhance the beauty of the fort. Medak Fort is considered one of the important hill forts of Deccan.
