West Siang District is located in the central part of
Arunachal Pradesh, covering an area of 8,325 sq km. The population is 100,000. The district is bounded by China in the north,
East Siang and
Upper Siang districts in the east,
Lakhimpur District of
Assam in the South and
Upper Subansiri and
Lower Subansiri districts of Arunachal Pradesh in west. The northern part of West Siang District consists of tangle peaks and valleys. There is a wide range of climatic and geographical variations. The district takes its name from the River Siang (Siang Ane).
Galong, Minyong, Bori, Bokar, Pailibo, Ramo and Membas are the major tribes. Cultivation is the main occupation of the villagers - ceremonies and festivals are associated with a 'fertility cult.' They also specialize in weaving, fine arts and craft. The various tribal groups are governed by a highly organized and powerful self-governing body called Kebang. The main languages spoken are Adi,
Hindi,
Assamese and English.
The major festivals are Mopin, Solung, Donging and Losar. The main tourist destinations include Akashi Ganga,
Malinithan at Likabali, and
Gompa at Mechuka. Airports at Along and Lilabari (Assam) are the nearest airport/helipad, and Silapathar is the railway station.
The headquarters of West Siang District is situated at Along. Basar and Likabali are the other major towns.
