Lakhimpur District of
Assam covers an area of 2,277 sq km, and supports a population of nearly a million. About 98% of the population lives in rural areas. The climate is humid sub-tropical with an average rainfall of about 608 cm. The
Brahmaputra, Subansiri, Ranganadi, and Dikrong are the major rivers running through Lakhimpur. The total forest area is about 82,967 hectare.
There are a host of tribal communities such as Mishing, Rabha, and Bodo. Their indigenous 'eri-muga-pat' handloom fabric is world famous. The Moitri Ashram, spreading the messages of ahimsa and universal brotherhood, is situated on the outskirts of the town of Lakhimpur.
