Sthaneswar Mahadev Temple is situated in
Thanesar town of
Kurukshetra District. The temple has a distinct history.
Pandavas are said to have prayed to
Lord Shiva here, for their success in the battle of
Mahabharat.
A legend regarding the waters of the tank adjoining the temple is widely accepted. It is believed that a few drops of water cured King Ban from leprosy. Thanesar town got its name from this temple.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was once the part of the Pushyabhuti dynasty. Local type architecture is inculcated in the work of the dome shaped roof. ‘Amla’ shaped facade roof is made more beautiful by a tall pinnacle. The main idol in the temple is very ancient and is still worshipped by the people.
