Sowmya Narayana Temple

Badrinath of the South

Sowmya Narayana Temple is located at Tirukkottiur near Tiruppattur. It is an ancient temple, one of the 108 temples and abodes of Lord Vishnu, worshipped in the Tamil hymns of the Alwars. The deity of the temple is Vishnu as Paramapadanathan. The Utsavar is Sowmya Narayana Perumaal and Taayaar here is Tirumaamagal Naachiyaar.

Belief is that the Devas came as a group to worship Vishnu and request him to rid the universe of the demon Hiranyakacipu at this place. The temple is in four levels. The first one has Vishnu in a relaxed leaning position. The second and the third levels are the postures in standing and sitting positions. There is a shrine to Shiva (Sarabeswarar) in the form of a shivling here. The main festivals are the annual Brahmotsavam celebrated in the month of Chittirai and the Vasantotsavam in Vaikasi. Other festivals are Maasi Teppa Utsavam, Aadi Pooram, Pavitrotsavam, Navaratri, Adhyayana Utsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadasi.
