Silambu is an ornament worn around the ankles. This ornament is referred to in most Tamil texts. In olden periods both men and women wore a variety of anklets. Anklets (silambu) worn by women were made of gold with pearls inside to produce a characteristic sound. Silambu is worn by dancers during performances. It produces a rhythmic, jingling sound in tune with the steps of the dancer. In north India, silambu is known by the name
ghungroo.
