Ghungroos are globular bells set on cloth or leather strips, usually used by dancers who wear them around both ankles. Larger ghungroos may be strung on a circle of wire and shaken as accompaniment to a song. The ghungroo bells are decorative and the cords strung on are often bright and decorated with tassels. Ghungroo has possibly evolved from the payal, the traditional anklet of Indian women.
