Senapati District covers an area of 3,271 sq km with a population of around 200,000. It is bounded by
Imphal East and
Imphal West districts in the south,
Ukhrul District in the east,
Tamenglong District in the west and the state of
Nagaland in the north. The climate is of humid subtropical. The main crops cultivated are
rice, maize, potato, cabbage and tomato. Senapati is home to many medicinal plants.
The important tourist places are Mao and
Makhel. Mao is one of the oldest hill stations in
Manipur and is located midway between
Dimapur and Imphal. Makhel is the legendary place of origin of the Meiteis and Nagas. Gang-Ngai,
Lui-Naig-Ni, Kut and Chumpha are some of the festivals.
