Puri District




Puri, a coastal district of Orissa, occupies a distinct place in the tourist map of India and is one of the four dhams (holiest points) of Hindus. It boasts a continuous history from the 3rd century BC and is known for its historic antiquities, architectural grandeur and religious sanctuaries. It has an area of 3,055 sq km and holds a population of over 1.5 million. The climate is moderate with cool winters. October to April is the tourist season. Oriya is the chief language spoken in the region.

Puri is famous for the Lord Jagannath Temple and a car festival. It is said that 13 festivals are celebrated in a calendar year relating to Lord Jagannath. Puri District is also home to the architectural marvel of the Sun Temple at Konark. This region has a rich heritage and is famous for its stone sculpture, palm-leaf paintings, patta paintings, tassar paintings, sand art, and applique work.

Important tourist locations are Chilika Lake, Balighai Beach, Baliharachandi Beach, Raghurajpur, Ramchandi Beach, Satyabadi, and the fishing center of Astranga Beach.
