Parangat Festival is one of the main festivals of
Hrongkhols, a tribal group of
Assam. Parangat means ‘flower’ and the festival is associated with the arrival of spring season. Hrongkhols observe Parangat on a full moon day. The celebration begins in evening and continues till next morning.
During the festival, all paths are closed except the main entry to the village. After that, the young men of the village collect wild flowers from the nearby forest and offer them to the oldest man of the village in a decorated basket. Then all the villagers greet each other and welcome the advent of spring. The whole night is spent singing and dancing.
