A modern version of Dundubhi, Nissan is a musical instrument found in
Gujarat and
Rajasthan.
Nissan is a big metal bowl made of bronze, copper or iron, covered with buffalo hide and played using sticks. This very old instrument, as old as the Hindu epic the Ramayana, is mentioned in
Sangeeta Ratnakara (a musical work of 13th century). It was also used as a martial drum in Orissa.
