Monsang Tribe mostly live in the
Chandel District,
Manipur, in five villages namely Liwachaning, Heibunglok, Liwa Sarei, Japhou, and Monsang Pantha. Their name is derived from the name of a village, Mosang. They call themselves Sirti or ‘southerners’. Their language is similar to that of the Anals. Meiteilon or
Manipuri is used while talking with
Tangkhul,
Marings,
Thadou and other communities. The tribe has regular contacts with other communities through economic activities at
Pallel,
Kakching, Chandel and
Imphal. Literacy is given much importance among these groups.
