The Marings Tribe is abundant in the hilly villages of the Tengnoupal subdivision in
Chandel District,
Manipur. They were closely related and allied with the Meitei Kings and their name was derived from ‘mei’ (fire) and ‘ring’ (start or produce). The three groups of this tribe are identified from the different colours of black, red, and red and black on the border of their dress. The original native place of this tribe is considered the village, Machi, which is the center of the Black Marings. Their language is close to that of the Kuki-Chin branch of Tibeto-Burman family. The Maring villages are economically backward and rudimentary in nature. They play important roles in the state politics.
