Khardong Monastery is an ancient monastery, situated 5 km from
Keylong, in
Lahaul and Spiti District,
Himachal Pradesh.
It is situated on the left bank of Bhaga River, in Khardong Village at an altitude of 3,500 m above sea level. Built in 12th century, it is known for its typical 'Lahaul and Spiti' style sculpture and architecture.
Khardong monastery has a large library, which houses the Kangyur and Tangyur volumes of Buddhist scriptures in Bhoti style, old weapons and a large collection of beautiful and delicate Thangka paintings and musical instruments including lutes, drums and horns.
The monastery boasts the largest strength of monks and nuns in the Lahaul region.
The monastery can be reached by bus from Keylong.
