Kandariya Mahadeva Temple




Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the most elegant and famous of the group of temples at Khajuraho, a historic town situated in Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva. Towards north of this temple is the Devi Jagdamba Temple.

This temple is believed to have built during the reign of Chandella king Vidyadhar, around the 11th century. It consists of ardhamandapa, mandapa, a Mahamandapa supported with pillars, the garbagriha and the pradakshina. The tower of the temple is about 100 ft high.

A Shivling is seen in the sanctum of the temple. The ornately carved main shrine is adorned with more than 800 images, of which most of them are three ft high.

Civil Airport Khajuraho is situated 2 km from the Khajuraho Bus Station. Khajuraho Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
