Jetavana Monastery

Jetavana was once a important religious site situated at Sravasti, in Uttar Pradesh. The remains of Jetavana, a splendid monastery with inscriptions dating back to the 12th century, is believed to be one of the favorite sites of the Buddha. The monastery was erected in a garden outside the walls of the city.

According to the historians, Buddha had spent his 25 years at this monastery. Buddha is supposed to have delivered many sermons at Sravasti and done many miracles. The famous Magadha King Ashoka (273-236 BC) constructed two pillars of 21 m high on either side of the eastern gateway of the monastery.

Today there are two monasteries, six temples and five stupas (pillars). The Gandhakuti Temple, built by a monk named Ananthapindika, is considered the most sacred one. Gandhakuti, the room Buddha used to meditate, is now considered a favorite place to meditate. The pond near the main monastery is said to be the bathing pond of Lord Buddha. The 2500-year old well situated opposite to the main shrine was the main source of water to the monastery. There is a Bodhi tree situated inside the compound of the monastery, which is believed to have been brought from Gaya.
