Sravasti is an ancient pilgrim town situated on the banks of Rapti River in north-eastern
Uttar Pradesh. The town is believed to have been founded by the mythological king, Sravast – hence the name. Sravasti around 50 km east of
Bahraich.
Sravasti was the erstwhile capital of the kingdom of Kosala. The place is closely associated with Buddha, Mahavir and the Jain Tirthankar Sambhavnath. In Pali Language, the place is known as Savatthi.
The modern name of Sravasti is Saheth-Maheth, the two parts of the town is split by a motor-able road. One can enter Saheth, which is spread over 32 acres, through the Balrampur-Sravasti road. Major attraction here is the site of the Jetavana monastery.
The ancient fortified city of Maheth, sprawling over 400 acres, is located to the north of Saheth, towards the Rapti River. Though in a dilapidated state with the vagaries of time, the five gates and walls of the fortification is still visible amidst rubbles. Excavations have revealed the remains of ancient structures and stupas from the site. Other attractions include the Buddhist shrines of Pakki Kuti and Kuchhi Kuti and the
Sobhanath Temple.
Other spots worth visiting in Sravasti include Swarnagandha Kuti, Anand Bodhi tree, Jetvana Vihar, Kausambi Kuti and Devi Patan Temple (28 km).
The nearest airport is at Lucknow (134 km). Closest railway station is at Balrampur.
