Cumbarjua

Cumbarjua is a historic place located at the eastern end of Tiswadi taluk, in North Goa District. It is on the banks of the Mandovi River and is around 2 km from Corlim and 20 km from Panaji, the state capital. Cumbarjua is bounded by Marcel in the west, Banastarim in the south and St Estevam in the north.

The history of Cumbarjua dates back to the 15th century. Agriculture and fishing are the main occupations of the villagers. Once Cumbarjua was a lively and flourishing locale with numerous industrial establishments. The first cashewnut factory in Asia was located here. The importance of the place declined in the course of time. The inhabitants of the place mainly belong to Gawda and Kumbhars communities.

Cumbarjua Canal - where crocodile sightings are a common feature - is the main attraction. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Carambolim Lake, Se Cathedral Church, Church of St Francis of Assisi and the Basilica of Bom Jesus are accessible from here.

Goa Airport and Karmali Railway Station are the nearest airport and major railhead respectively. The National Highway 4A passes close by.
