Barunai, about 32 km from
Bhubaneswar, is a prime tourist destination in
Orissa. This scenic spot lies in the eastern region of
Khordha District, close to
Puri District. Roughly 2 km south is
Khordha, the district headquarters.
Barunai Hill - at an altitude of 305 m above sea level - with several caves is the major point of interest. There are remnants of a fort built by King Dibyasingha Deva at the foot of the hill. The Barunai Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is a prominent shrine in this area. Another attraction of Barunai is Swarga Ganga (meaning ‘the Ganges of the Heaven’) - a perennial spring flowing down the hill beside the shrine.
