Barunai is a small hill situated about two km south of
Khordha, in
Orissa. It is a saddle-backed hill rising into bare and often inaccessible precipices. Situated at an altitude of 305 m above sea level, a major portion of the hill is covered by reserve forests.
There is a fort situated at the foot of the hill. The fort is now in a dilapidated state, some traces of its walls and the ramparts still remaining. A temple dedicated to Goddesses Barunai, is situated on the northern slope of the hill, about 46 m above the plain.
Barunai Hill features several caves; the largest is the Pandavaguha, which can easily accommodate about 100 persons. There are a few ancient inscriptions, of which one is that of Makaradhwaja Yogi of 10th century another dated 8th century, and three others inscribed in old Kutila characters. A perennial spring which flows down the hill by the side of the shrine, adds to its charm.
There is a rest house situated near the temple with an accommodation for seven persons.
