Balapur Fort is situated at the confluence of the Mana and the Mhais rivers, in
Balapur. The construction of the fort was started by Azam Shah, the son of the
Mughal emperor
Aurangzeb, and was completed by Ismail Khan, the Nawab of Ellichpur. Built of bricks, the fort is perhaps the strongest in the region. The fort is noted for its elaborate carvings and three gateways, one of which has doors studded with long spikes, capable to resist elephants.
