Located in
Akola District, Balapur is a historic town named after goddess Baladevi. Positioned between the two rivers Mana and Mhais, the place is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot.
The place has been mentioned in Ain-I-
Akbari as one of the richest paraganas in the subah of Berar. It is the native place of the 17th century saint Bal Krishnabua, disciple of
Samarth Ramdas. Azim Shah, son of the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb, had stayed at this place. Also a commercial center, the place was famous for its people who manufactured paper and produced good quality ‘satranjis.’
There is a fort at the confluence of Mana and Mhais rivers, and a stone-made canopy of Raja Jai Singh in Balapur. A haveli built by Sayed Amjad (a local saint) and a mosque in Kasarpura are worth visiting.
