Azhoor Bhagavathi Temple is located in the heart of Azhoor in
Thiruvananthapuram District of
Kerala. It is about two kilometers from
Perumathura. This temple is dedicated to Azhoor Bhagavathi.
Belief has it that once a person saw a ‘mudi’ (throne of Goddess) at this place and thus constructed a temple at that site. The temple is now managed by the Azhoor Temple Trust, which was formed in 1982. Sarkara Devi Temple and Ganapati Temple are the nearby pilgrim centers.
The Bhagavathi Temple celebrates its seven-day annual festival during March-April. It is connected with the birthday of Goddess of Azhoor, which is famous as the Meena Karthika Mahotsavam. On the final day, a procession from Erathu Madan Nada Temple starts and reaches the Azhoor Bhagavathi Temple by evening. It is escorted with Thalapolies, Vadhyamelam(instrumental music) and caparisoned elephants. Among the final day festivities, the main attraction is the Garudan Thookkam.
Azhoor Bhagavathi Temple can be reached by a diversion from the National Highway 47 (connecting Thiruvananthapuram - Kollam) at Kachery Junction. From here a travel of 7 km towards Varkala leads to Valiyakada, which is 2 km away from the temple. The temple can also be approached on the Kaniyapuram – Murukkumpuzha route. The nearest railhead is Chirayinkil Railway Station.
