Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata) is about 17 to 20 inches in size and has a characteristic large shovel-shaped bill. Males have green head, a white body, rusty-red under side and black wings. Females have mottled brown, black and white feathers and a blue patch on their wings.
The bird inhabits shallow edges of lakes and ponds, shallow marshes, and sloughs. Diet consists of aquatic vegetation such as pondweeds, sedges, grasses and water lilies. Tiny crustaceans, mollusks, algae and insects are also consumed.
Female lays 8 to 12 eggs in a nest made of grass and leaves. The nest is built on the ground under a bush or in tall vegetation.
The bird can be spotted around Lingambudi Lake, Karnataka.
