Tehri Garhwal District




Tehri Garhwal, one of the western most districts of Uttaranchal is located on the outer ranges of the Himalayas. It is bounded by the districts of Uttarkashi in the north, Rudraprayag in the east, Pauri Garhwal in the south and Dehradun in the west. Tehri Garhwal, covering an area of over 4,100 sq km, has a population of around 610,000. The major languages are Garhwali, Hindi and English. The district headquarters is New Tehri.

A major portion is hilly tract. The plain area is more fertile than the plateau area. The major tourist destinations are Buda Kedar temple, Deoprayag, Kunjapuri, Khatling glacier, Narendra Nagar, Chamba, Omkarananda Kamakshi Devi Mandir, Dhanaulti and Nagtibba. Tehri Garhwal is well connected by road to Dehradun, Mussoorie, Haridwar, Pauri, Rishikesh, and Uttarkashi. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport and the nearest railway station is at Rishikesh.
