New Tehri is the seat of administration of
Tehri Garhwal District, in
Uttaranchal. It is a newly established master-planned township that came into existence after the old Tehri Town had assumed its watery grave. The old town got submerged after the completion of the dam project across
River Bhagirathi. New Tehri now stands as an icon of progressive development and Asia’s most comprehensive resettlement exercise that has ever been undertaken. It is located just 11 km from the hill town of
Mussorie.
From New Tehri, one could catch a sweeping view of the snow capped Himalayas and the enchanting
Bhagirathi valley. Boating facilities are available at the catchment area of the dam.
Nearest airport is at Dehradun. Though Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest one to New Tehri, Haridwar Junction Railway Station, situated 88 km away, would be more convenient as it is well connected with all the major cities of India.
