Sultanpur District forms part of
Faizabad division of
Uttar Pradesh. It is bordered by
Faizabad District in the north,
Pratapgarh District in the south,
Azamgarh District,
Ambedkarnagar District, and
Jaunpur District in the east and
Bara-Banki District and
Rae Bareli District in the west. It has an area of 4,436 sq km with a population of 3.2 million.
Sultanpur town is the headquarters. People speak mostly in Avadhi dialect of Eastern
Hindi. The
Gomti is the main river, where the mineral Kankar is found in abundance along the riverside.
Sultanpur has a semi-arid climate. It features very hot summer and equally cold winter season. In summer, the temperature rises above 44°C. Majority of the people depend on agriculture. Paddy, wheat, gram, barley, sugarcane and potatoes are the major crops. Jagdishpur is famous for large and medium scale industries of different varieties. Small and medium scale industries include rice mills, carpet manufacturing, and oil mills. Cottage and handloom industries are also located throughout Sultanpur.
Nagpanchami, Janmashtami, Dussehra, Kartik Poornima, Shivratri, Holi, Muharram, Chelhum, Shab-e-Barat, Eid ul-Fitr,
Christmas, Easter, Ashtinhikas, and Paryushana are some of the main festivals celebrated.
