Gomti River is one of the most sacred rivers of north India. It originates from a reservoir called Gomat tal, which is about 3 km east of
Pilibhit, and flows into the
River Ganges. It passes through {Lucknow,} the capital of
Uttar Pradesh and the latter part of its course through
Barabanki,
Sultanpur,
Faizabad and Jaunpur districts. The length of the river is 800 km.
According to legends, the river is considered to be the daughter of Sage Vashistha. During solar eclipse, devotees believe that taking a bath in the Gomti is equivalent to the bath taken in the river in
Kurukshetra.
