Saunk, also spelt Sonkh, is a 2,500 year old town in
Mathura District.
The excavations at this place have unfolded a cultural continuity from the 1st millennium B C to the 9th century. The site yielded several rare collections of
terracottas and sculptures of the Kushana Empire.
Saunk is around 32 km from
Mathura and 64 km from
Agra on the way to Govardhan, before
Maghora.
Mathura Junction Railway Station and
Agra Civil Enclaves are the nearest railway station and airport.
A prior permission has to be obtained from the Director, Government Museum, Mathura, to visit this place.
