Khairabad, on the
National Highway 24, is a historical town in
Sitapur District of
Uttar Pradesh. It is believed to have been established in the 11th century.
Khairabad was a pilgrim spot during the period of king Vikramaditya. This town was brought under the control of Babar in 1527. It was under Humayun for sometimes until he was defeated by Shershah. During Akbar’s reign, Khairabad was the Commisionery of Awadh State.
The town was also a trading center, where Kashmiri shawls, jewels of Birmingham and elephants of Assam were traded.
Popular of the attractions are Imambara and dargah of Hazrat Makhdum.
Sitapur is 7 km north-west of Khairabad. Other nearby towns are Machrehta and Kamlapur to the south and Parsendi to the east.
Khairabad Railway Station is on the Sitapur – Sidhauli rail route. The nearest airport is Amausi Airport, 85 km away.
