New Delhi, the political nerve center and capital city of India, is on the west bank of the
Yamuna River in
Delhi. Spacious and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, New Delhi was built as the imperial capital of India by the British.
New Delhi comprises of the business and residential areas around Connaught Place, the government areas around Rajpath, Janpath, Tilak Marg, President Estate, Ashoka Road, Parliament Street, Golf Link, Teen Murti Marg and Chanakyapuri.
Janpath houses the government tourist offices, hotels, tourist shopping centers. Chanakyapuri, locates most the embassies, is south of New Delhi. Old Delhi is situated north of Connaught Place.
Being the seat of the Central Government of India, New Delhi houses the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, the Prime Minister's office and residence, central government offices, foreign missions. Residences of central ministers, members of parliament, diplomats are located here. Delhi high court and Supreme Court of India are placed here.
India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Lodhi Tombs, Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, Mughal Garden, Purana Quila,
Humayun's Tomb, Nizam-ud-din's Shrine, Safdarjung's Tomb and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib are places of historical and religious importance in New Delhi.
National Rail Museum, National Museum, Crafts Museum, Indira Gandhi National Center of Arts, National Philatelic Museum,
Teen Murti Bhavan, Tibet house, Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum, National Museum of Natural History, and Dilli Haat are the other tourist attractions here. Patiala house, Pakistan house, Bikaner house of historical and architectural importance is situated here.
Lodi Garden, Talkatora Garden, Nehru Park, Musical Dancing Fountain are the major recreation centers.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Safdarjang and Ram Manohar Lohia hospitals of international repute are housed here.
Indira Gandhi International Airport is 20 km south of New Delhi. The main bus station is north of the Old Delhi Railway Station at Kashmiri Gate. New Delhi Railway Station at Paharganj is the nearest railway station.
