Kaithamalai Sri Vetri Velayudhaswami Temple, also famous as Uttukuli Murugan Temple, is located at
Uttukuli in
Erode District of
Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to
Lord Muruga. It is about 19 km from
Chennimalai and 90 km from
Maruthamalai.
Evidences reveal that this temple, which dates back over 200 years, was constructed by some rural kings of that period. This temple was recently renovated.
The most noteworthy feature of the temple is that the ‘temple car’ is placed on a hill. During the festival season, this chariot is pulled by thousands of devotees to the temple and back to the hill. Thus the god is named as ‘Vetri Velayudha Swami’ and the temple as ‘Kaithamalai’. Thaipusam is the major festival of this temple.
