Thiruvalanchuzhi Temple, also known as Sri Vellaipillayar Temple, is a highly revered shrine located at
Thiruvalanchuzhi in
Thanjavur District of
Tamil Nadu. It is about six kilometers from
Kumbakonam and is near to
Swamimalai.
The presiding deity of the Thiruvalanchuzhi Temple is Lord Ganesh. The idol of the temple is white in color, and known by the name Swetha (white) Vinayaka. It is believed that this idol was consecrated by the Devas, who are said to have made the idol from the foaming froth of the sea.
This ancient temple is noted for its great dimensions and architectural grandeur. The temple with stone pillars and stone lattice work contains many inscriptions, among which the important one is that of Raja Raja Cholan. There are also inscriptions that date back to the period of Parantaka Chola I. The temple tank is another instance of ancient architecture. Bhairava shrine is situated nearby.
The main festivals celebrated at Thiruvalanchuzhi Temple are Ganesh Chaturthi, and a festival on the 6th day of the bright half of the Tamil month Margazhi.
