Namakkal




Namakkal, the administrative headquarters of Namakkal District, is a historic town situated 132 km east of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Main attraction of the town is the 17th century Namakkal Fort.

Namakkal is steeped in history. The city was ruled by the Hoysalas until the 14th century and was under the rule of Vijayanagar kings until 1565. Madurai Nayaks ascended the throne in 1623. After 1635, the region came under the successive rules of Muslim Sultans of Bijapur and Golconda, Mysore kings and then the Marathas. Later the British wrested control and the town remained with them until India’s Independence in 1947.

Nearest airport is at Tiruchirapalli (74 km). Nearest major railhead is Salem Junction Railway Station. Regular buses connect this place with Salem (48 km), Coimbatore, and Chennai (306 km).
