Jhalawar

Jhalawar, the seat of administration of Jhalawar District, is situated in south-eastern Rajasthan and is 87 km south of Kota. This erstwhile princely state of Jhalas was created in 1838 by the British, by dividing Kota.

Situated at the edge of Malawi plateau, unlike the rest of Rajasthan, Jhalawar has water-laden verdant landscape though rocky terrains dominate its topography. The thickly wooded forests and exotic wildlife variety, massive forts and monuments and some exquisite cave paintings – all portray Jhalawar’s rich cultural heritage and natural splendor. Red poppy fields and orange laden orchards dominate the countryside while the region around Bhawani Mandi contributes a major chunk of the citrus fruit in the country.

Places of tourist interest include Jhalawar Fort (Garh Palace), Government Museum, Bhawani Natya Shala and Chandrabhaga Temples (7 km). Bhimsagar Dam (24 km), Rain Basera (6 km), Gagron Fort, Fort of Gangadhar (120 km), Dalhanpur (54 km) and Kakuni (65 km) constitute interesting excursions.

Nearest airport is at Kota. Jhalawar Road Railway Station is on the Kota-Nagda line. Jhalawar Bus Station has regular bus services to Jaipur (335 km), Ajmer (292 km), Kota (87 km) and Bundi (123 km). National Highway 12 passes through the city.
