Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, an internationally renowned musician and
Sarod player, was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) in 1922. He has established the Ali Akbar College of Music in California. It was Ustad Ali Akbar Khan who, with the enthusiastic support of great violin maestro Yehudi Menuhin, cut the first long-playing disc of
Hindustani Classical music in the late 1950s in New York and acquainted the Western musical world with Indian
ragas. He has also composed music for movies such as Satyajit Ray's ‘Devi’ and Tapan Sinha's ‘Khudita Pashan’. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan has been nominated five times for a Grammy Award.
